It's broader shape makes it a better fit then spaghetti for sauces that are heavier, meatier or generally thicker in nature. In comparison to other famous cuts, linguine is narrower then fettuccine which in turn is narrower then tagliatelle. The wider the sauce, the more of a bronze-extruded surface it provides to which rich sauces can adhere.
